Rails: It's Nothing Revolutionary
In a discussion we were having in the forums, Dave said...
I have now been through the entire ROR tutorial. There are some interesting paradigms but nothing that is revolutionary.
This reminded my of a conversation I had with my fried Joe about Rails. He said that the key to Rails is that it's built on sound models that have already been proven in the real world. Model View Controller and Object Relational Mapping are becoming standards, even in the slow moving enterprise. Joe also said..
Art is based on the same primary colors -- so why is some more fantastic than others?
This is the secret sauce of Rails, it's how everything is brought together. These patterns are not new, they are actually just now reaching a maturity that is un-matched in web development. The way Rails puts them together in one seamless framework is almost artistic.
If the paradigms that Rails used were revolutionary, like any revolutionary artist, it would take years for it to be accepted.
Riding Rails just posted that July 25 was Rails' 2 year anniversary. The alarming rate at which Rails is being adopted says that it's something that we're ready for. We don't need change, we need simplification.
